How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in Word
If you’re unfamiliar with the concept, here's what you need to know about styles: You can apply Microsoft Word styles to any text by selecting the text, clicking the Home tab, and choosing a style in the Styles Gallery. Hover your mouse over the style, and you can see what the text will look like before you apply the style to it. When you do apply a style to text, you also can apply an entire collection of formats to the text with just that one click. Word saves styles along with the document, so they travel with the file wherever it goes.

To create your own template, first apply the appropriate styles to your document. Next, save those styles as described in part one of this article, then click on the Office Button “Save As.” In the Save as type dropdown menu that will appear, select “Word Template” (.dotx) or “Word Macro-Enabled Template” (.dotm).
Add and remove styles from the Quick Styles gallery - Word
On the Design tab, click the More arrow in the bottom-right corner of the Document Formatting group, and then choose a style set such as Basic or Casual.
To see a preview of how a particular Style will reformat your text, simply hover your mouse pointer over that Style and pause a moment—your text will briefly change to the new settings. It will revert to its previous formatting as soon as you move your mouse pointer away
Learning to use styles and new features introduced in Microsoft Word 7557 such as Quick Style Sets and the Quick Styles Gallery can save you time in drafting documents.
Note: Removing a style from the Quick Styles gallery does not remove the style from the entries that appear in the Styles task pane. The Styles task pane lists all of the styles in the document.
Imagine that you have to create a weekly report for your branch of the company that will, eventually, be merged into a bigger report for the corporate offices. The CEO has instructed you to create a Style Set for everyone in all the branches to use, so the reports can be merged seamlessly with minimal reformatting. For the sake of brevity, we’ll create just one custom style for that Style Set. You can then use these instructions to create all the remaining styles such as titles, subtitles, several layers of headings, contents, footnotes, body text, etc.
From the Format menu, select Paragraph. In the Alignment drop list, choose Justified, and in Special drop list, choose None. In the Outline Level drop list, select Body Text. For both left and right indentation choose 6 inch. For spacing, choose 6 point for Before and After, and for Line Spacing, choose Single.
A style set is a preset combination of fonts, paragraph line spacing, character spacing, and indentation. Style sets enable you to quickly change the look of the document without manually reformatting each paragraph.
Select the rest of the document (everything except the title paragraph). Then open the Font drop-down list and select Constantia (Body), or any other style, at the top of the list.
